Gun Stores Can’t Get Guns Fast Enough To Keep Up With Demand From Anti-Obama Paranoia

Last year, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre made the odd claim that President Obama intentionally avoided gun regulation during his entire first term as part of a “massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment in our country.” While LaPierre’s claim that Obama is simply waiting for a second term so that he can “get busy dismantling and destroying our firearms’ freedom” is more than a little implausible, it’s also proved to be a bonanza for the gun industry. Thanks to gun owners who share LaPierre’s paranoia, gun manufacturers literally cannot produce guns fast enough to keep up with demand:

Royal Oak-based Target Sports normally sells about 10 guns a day, but that has increased to 30 a day this year, owner Ray Jihad said.
He’d be selling even more, if he could get them.
“I don’t have any Rugers. There are a few models we sell a lot of, but I can’t even get them,” he said. Southport, Conn.-based Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc., which makes rifles and handguns, has been so swamped with orders that it has stopped taking new requests until the end of May. . . .

Hume: G20 and the architecture of paranoia.

Looking west on Wellington St. from Bay St., Christopher Hume wonders whether these fences erected for the G20 are there to keep us out -- or world leaders in.

Judging from the preparations now under way for the G20 meeting later this month in Toronto, the world is no longer safe for the leaders of the planet’s largest economies. Whether that’s true or not we’ll never know; they will be hidden away behind so much fencing and weaponry, they will be invisible.

Still, one can’t help but wonder if the point of all this effort and expenditure — $1.3 billion and counting — is to keep them in or us out.

In either case, it says much about the state of our civilization that leadership — or what passes for it — has grown so wildly disconnected, distrusted and disliked by those being led that Canada feels it necessary to beggar itself to cover the cost of its own worst fears.

Security is one thing; paranoia quite another. What’s happening now in Toronto has little to do with the former, and everything to do with the latter.

At the October 2008 gun show, said one of the organizers of the Jungle Walk ($35 for an Uzi and a stroll through a path of pop-up targets), "it was like a McCain-Palin rally in here. It felt like we were going to win. Then you know what happened."

Ever since the election of President Barack Obama, gun store owners have reported massive increases in sales of firearms and ammunition. Attendees and sellers at Knob Creek can confirm that. Ron Hansen, a retiree from Michigan, grumbles that the ammunition supply at the show has "declined dramatically" since the displays of only a year ago. Myron Moore, a seller making a brisk trade in pistols and clips, explains that sales spiked right after the election and have slipped only a little because people worry this will be their last chance to stock up. "I’m selling everything Obama’s trying to ban," he laughs.

Paranoid much?

What it is with wingnuts and guns I can only speculate, but limited intellectual curiosity coupled with moral retardation goes a long way in "solving for this particular"X"". And the description of the event as a "McCain-Palin Rally" solidifies my perspective that the bulk of "gun nuts" are republicans, which implies a sort of intellectual shortfall.
